Is the skin dry in the summertime?
When exposed to UV rays, our skin loses moisture due to heat waves. The humidity of the skin also increases as the skin temperature rises and body sweats increase. Because the high skin humidity in the summer, we feel our skin is moist. However, the truth is that it only looks shiny on the skin's surface; the skin is very dry underneath.
Natural Moisturizing Factor
Natural moisturizing factor (NMF) is only found in the stratum corneum. NMF is designed to hold moisture in and allows the outermost layers of the stratum corneum to retain lots of moisture in an extremely dried environment. Common components of NMF are: Amino acids, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and fatty acids. Prickly pear seed oil consists of NMF and similar components and thus, its ability to hold moisture is outstanding. Our Hydration Routine products contain not only prickly pear seed oil, but also hyaluronic acid and ceramides, two main components of NMF. In addition to holding moisture in the the skin in order to prevent water loss, those ingredients offer antioxidant benefits and help reinforce the skin's barrier.
Skin dryness caused by UV rays during the summertime
When skin loses moisture resulting from exposure to UV rays, it produces excess sebum and becomes oily. And the skin gets rough as dead skin cells are accumulated on the skin. Proper moisture content of the stratum corneum is about 20-35%. If it falls below 10%, the skin becomes rough and skin complexion looks dull with increased thickness of the stratum corneum as the result of the accumulation of dead skin cells that did not fall off the skin. This skin condition causes a deficiency of NMF.

For dry skin, a mist or hydrating cream can provides hydration to the skin. However, as water from the product that is applied on the skin evaporates from the skin surface, evaporation of moisture in the skin also occurs and it causes skin tightness.
